Volunteering Opportunities at TEMS


Parents are a very important part of many activities at T/E Middle School. Descriptions of the different opportunities available for parents to become involved are found below.

In School Opportunities- The following occurs mostly in the school with kids around.

  • August mailing Packet Pick-Up-​ TEMS offers parents the opportunity to pick-up the class schedules at the school. PTO volunteers help with this distribution (Late August)
  • Opening day packet FulfillmentA large envelope of the school, district and PTO papers will be sent home with your student on the first day of school. The PTO is responsible for "stuffing" these envelopes. (Aug)
  • Back to School Sale- Several days prior to school starting, the PTO opens its School Store. All items on the "School Supply List" are available in the TEMS School Store. Gym Uniforms are sold at this time.  Checks for gym uniforms should be made out to T/E School District.      (Aug 18-19, Aug 22 10-1pm)
  • Health Screenings- As with the elementary schools, TEMS will measure height, weight, and test sight and hearing. Volunteering for this is an ideal time to interact with the students. (Sept 6)
  • "Break the Ice" Welcome Back Social- This informal event is held in the cafeteria 6-8pm on a Friday night in September. It's a fun way to kick off the school year. (Sept 16)
  • Picture day-​Parents help usher the students through the photographer lines.Typically 1-2 hour shifts.     (Sept 20)
  • School Store- The TEMS School Store, located adjacent to the cafeteria, is open every school day from 11:10am-1pm. Students are allowed to shop during their lunch/activity period. Two-hour shifts are assigned.
  • Dance Chaperone- Grades 7 and 8 have several dances throughout the year, Friday nights in the TEMS cafeteria. Parent volunteers help during the dance. (Throughout the school year)
  • MLK Casserole Drive- On the Tuesday after Martin Luther King holiday, the PTO collects hundreds of frozen casseroles that are immediately distributed to local shelters and food banks. parent volunteers help with collection and distribution. (7-8am January 2017)​
  • 5th/6th Grade Social Event- The Friday of Spring Teacher Conferences (during half-day),a social event is planned for grades 5/6.Typically this is outside of school (going to a movie, bowling, Arnolds has been done in the past). (Feb 2017)
  • Handels Spirit Day- This fundraiser is held in may. Volunteers supervise a safe-walk route from the school to Handels.(May 2017)
  • 8th Grade Recognition- This is held on the last day of school. grade 8  parents help with invitation and decorating and Grade 7 parents help with hospitality. (June 2017-Last day of school)
  • Student Council Magazine Sale-The Student Council runs ONE fundraiser a year. Parent volunteers help tally the orders. (Sept/Oct)
  • Cultural Arts- Parent volunteers help with a variety of jobs from greeting speakers to planning and promoting. (Throughout the school year)
  • SpiritWear Sales- The PTO offers t-shirts, sweatshirts and other items with the school logo. Help is needed to sell these items at various school events.(As needed)
  • Parent/Teacher Conference Scheduling- At the Middle School, 15 minute parent-teacher conference times are scheduled by calling in on certain days.Parent volunteers will answer the phones for scheduling. (Fall and Spring)


At Home Opportunities-The following opportunities are those that occur mostly out of the school or can be handled on your own time, at home.

  • TEMS Parent Trivia Night- This is the PTO's fundraising activity for parents only. It is held during the weekend night. (Feb 2017)​ 
  • Hospitality/Baking- The PTO hosts a handful of events and tables that require the donation of baked goods. There is no obligation to bake for every request. (As needed)
  • Barnes & Noble Book Fair-This fundraiser is held in June. The summer reading assignments are on display. Parent volunteers  help with activities at the store. (Dec 2016/May 2017)
  • Welcoming Committee - The goal of the Welcoming Committee is to reach out to families who are new to the district, answer their questions, and ease their transition to the school and community. We connect new families with committee members who have children of similar ages, and we hold New Family Coffees once per month. In addition, multilingual committee members are available to assist new families in their native language. (As needed)


  • PTO Representative Opportunites-The following representative positions for school-related organizations are available. PTO Representatives  attend all respective meetings and report back to the TEMS PTO, throughout the school year. These representatives are not chosen by the PTO but rather the organization they represent.
